Here’s to a Healthy Training Cycle

Well hello, hello! Is it seriously Monday again? How do these things happen…jk, I’m ready to tackle the week I swear!

My post on Friday recapped my (almost) first week of NYC Half training. I told you guys about how I already switched up my plan according to how my body was feeling that week. As I stated, I’m pretty Type B, go with the flow, so it didn’t bother me that much to do something else and I was DOING something else. Bunches of you agreed with me, and while I know it’s true… like many of you too, I’m sure..sometimes you get that guilt that comes along with missing or changing your your “scheduled workout” ;especially when it’s leading up to a big event! While I’m pretty sure this is a natural feeling, sometimes it stays in the back of your mind.

As many of you also told me, we all have those days. Our bodies are trying to tell us something and we need to listen, despite a run or workout being scheduled. As my friend Kate told me those of us who stay strict and rigid with plans end up burnt out, injured, or in a bad mental state…and YEP, she’s right! As I reminded myself that I was trying to think of the things I can do to keep a very positive, healthy training cycle for my first half. So far I have:

  • Foam rolling, icing, stretching

Sometimes you have spectators while foam rolling. Cute furry ones

Foam rolling has been my go to before AND after my runs. Rolling out before make me feel much looser during my runs, especially in the calf department. Stretching my calves out will hopefully keep my Plantars facitis issues at bay! I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about my foot, so I’ve been icing and using a golf ball to roll on the bottom- mostly my heels and arch.

  • Warming up

Now, I can’t say I’ve been 100% on this, but I’ve been making an effort to do some dynamic warm-up before runs, hopefully to get rid of any junk first miles for myself. This is conveniently done while waiting for the Garmin to find satellites, which can sometimes be a good bit of time…. I don’t do anything crazy, high knees, butt kicks, gate walks, mummy kicks (personal FAV)… I’m doing my best to work myself into a good pace and not going out too first starting

  • Letting go the idea of a “Perfect Plan”

I am completely in understanding with the fact that training might not happen according to plan and ITS FINE. It’s OKAY. In fact, if you skipped it according to how your body felt, it definitely a good thing. If I need rest, rest I shall. I took it easy on Thursday helped me to tackle a hillier than usual, 4 mile run on Saturday and still feel okay on Sunday.

  • Not only analyzing the run, but how I felt mentally and physically too

While I am loving my Garmin, I’ve been trying not to get obsessed with numbers. I am trying to understand and comprehend how much my mental status has an affect on my run as well. Out of everything, for me, mental issues are the hardest part of running! Writing about it has helped. More about the Believe I Am Journal later ๐Ÿ™‚

Train Smart

Hi everyone! I hope you had a good weekend. I’m sorry for being MIA once again but I’ve had no wireless for like 5 days. I know… Seriously, First world problems. But it made blogging really difficult to do. Anyways..

Training has been great. I’ve been trying to run 2 or 3 times a week with biking on the trainer another 2 times a week while mixing in some lifting. Most of my workouts have been ending up with butlers push ups and ab circuits. The best part of all is the fact that my running has been going very well. I feel like I’m improving everyday and my endurance is getting better each time. It’s nice to be running and think “wow at this point I would be dying” and now I am a me to push past that and even give a little more. As good as I feel it’s really hard for me not to go full out gung ho and try to increase my speed mileage and do too much. What happens when I do that? Well, injury, aches, pains…. So I’m full on committed to being smart and adding a little at a time and seeing how the ol’ foot and body feel getting used to running. This is my “Wise and Mature Katie plan” or something like that.

This picture clearly showing how easily I’m taking it with mileage (just missing a few runs I’ve taken with no phone) but seriously nice and easy with mileage. In the long run (haha) I’m hoping that this will keep me injury free and only help me to improve. Already Ive been improving. The other day negative splits even happened! Say what!?

I know not that it’s far but I’ve been trying not to go out as hard in my first mile and slowly build my speed. Before I would generally go out my first mile like a mad woman and burn out by mile 2 oops. Lesson learned (only after like a million times).

I plan on taking my running slowly through December again and try to build a nice base that will hopefully work well enough for actual race training! ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope it to be for a few shorter races as well as a half marathon in there as well.

Here goes nothing!

What’s your train smart advice for me?

Hurricane day!

Well everyone I hope you all had a good weekend. My weekend got extended a little bit and because of Hurrican Sandy I will be at home today and most likely tomorrow considering things are supposed to get worse tonight and into Tuesday. At one point a town 30 minutes from me was supposed to get a direct hit and was even a trending topic on Twitter. Twitter makes everything serious. YIKES!

I’m at that little green dot…And that’s what we are dealing with this morning. The wind should be picking up by tonight…

So anyways, this weekend- I was supposed to run a 5k. It was nice because it was set up right in my town and easy to get to so I went and…..Cancelled. So great to get that notice before hand…but ohhhh well. I was excited to race so it was disappointing but what can you do? With all this I ended up losing motivation to run and decided to get on the trainer and watch Netflix instead- good choice I might say. (Side note: if you have Netflix start watching all the seasons of the TV show Rules of Engagement– it’s hilarious!)

Then I decided shopping was a good idea ..and then an even better idea was buying new shoes ๐Ÿ™‚ PRETTY new shoes!

Brooks Pureflows! They had me at their color and then putting them on was even better. I feel like they are molded right to my foot! Can’t wait to take them for a spin. (OH, running guru, Alex– whatcha think!?) I definitely wish that the weather wouldn’t be so terrible because I would have loved to take them out for a nice run! (And no…not running in the rain… ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Today is a much needed rest day– I spent 45 minutes on the indoor trainer Saturday and then an ab workout and played hockey for 3 hours Sunday (my team had NO subs either- ugh) and today my body hurts soooo very much. I may be popping in my Beach Babe DVD for the stretching session!

The rest of my hurricane day will be spent making pancakes…

Literally the best I’ve ever made. Adapted from Hollie’s recipe… ( I only added a packet of stevia and some agave for my sweetner part). Oh and I added a bunch of cinnamon because I LOVE it. Cocoa would also be an awesome add-in.

Eating apple crisp…

And preparing for possible power outage! Yikes- candles ready!

  • Are you affected by the hurricane today?
  • How was your weekend?

Friday Randoms

Haha, just kidding mine won’t even be as cool as that cat! I’ll be working! Oh well!

Happy weekend everybody! May you all have a wonderful LONG one!

Burning the Candle at Both Ends

So this week has not really gone as planned.

Really didn’t happen. Besides the strength training- that was on that was easy to throw in there, because I normally work and then take it. And I only did Yoga once…Jillian would be disappointed.

This week I worked both my jobs morning and then night. Getting there in the morning at 7am doesn’t really allow me time to get up and get a run in before because:

  • It’s Dark
  • It’s Cold
  • I do not love running enough to embrace either of those.

Then of course, when I had my short amount of time between jobs…

  • It Rained
  • The Wind was approx. 20 mph
  • It was cold.

No thank you.

I ended up working 3 times that I wasn’t even supposed to work so that kind of threw a wrench in my plans this week. Which is honestly fine I mean, I’m not opposed to making some extra cash! The other problem is that my jobs are fairly..well..80% of the time boring. So that means I need to find things to stay busy. And it makes me really tired. haha, ย how pathetic does that sound??

However though, working at a gym..when I was done my last shift I would jump on the revolving stairclimber that kicks my butt! Literally. Ever been on one? Takes about one minute to start dripping with sweat.

My kind of poor attempt at a picture on this torture machine

I did an interval session on 20 minutes on that thing. I honestly felt like i had run 5 mile run..with hills, so that counts right!? Has anyone ever used this machine ย before?

As soon as I got home from there I was ready to just go to sleep for the next early rise. I for whatever reason, just felt extra exhausted this week. That being said:

Right after this I”m lacing up and going out for a 3 mile run, because after I have a 2 hour drive to watch this guy get hooded for his Master’s Degree!

“I’m So proud”

But here’s to next week! and hopefully I’ll be able to figure out how to get it all in! The weather is apparently supposed to be perfect, so this is going to help so much. And I’m sorry for how whiney I just realized I sounded throughout this whole post…

Ever had a week like mine? What did you do? Anyone have some good plans for this weekend? I’m also going to a friends going away party!ย

For all of you Big Bang Theory viewers, this is for you:

Happy Friday!
